The Sage's Path

The Divine Life of Ramana Maharshi at Arunachala

In the sacred land of Tiruvannamalai, where the timeless hill of Arunachala rises like a silent witness to eternity, the life of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi unfolded as a living example of divine grace. His journey was not merely that of a saint, but a direct expression of the spiritual power of Arunachala itself — a power that has drawn seekers for centuries.

Here, under the watchful presence of Arunachaleswara Temple, the sacred Agni Lingam, representing the element of fire, shines as the eternal light of truth — burning away ignorance and revealing the Self.

Tamil Version

The Call of Arunachala

The call of Arunachala is not an ordinary call — it is the silent summons of the Divine itself.

At the age of sixteen, Ramana Maharshi experienced a sudden and powerful awakening. Without any external teacher, he underwent a deep inner realization of death — not physical death, but the understanding that the true Self is beyond the body and mind. In that moment, fear vanished, and pure awareness remained.

Soon after, he heard the sacred name “Arunachala.” Though he had never seen the place, something within him recognized it instantly. It was as if the soul remembered its source.

Leaving behind family, possessions, and identity, he journeyed to Tiruvannamalai. Upon reaching the holy town, he went straight to the temple and surrendered himself completely at the feet of Arunachaleswara Temple.

From that moment onward:

  • He no longer identified as an individual person

  • He remained absorbed in the Self

  • His life became one with Arunachala

This was not a journey of seeking — it was a return to the source.

Ramana later revealed that Arunachala is not just a physical hill, but the spiritual heart of the world, the center where the ego dissolves and truth shines.

Life in Silence and Grace

The early years of Ramana Maharshi at Arunachala were marked by complete silence and deep inward absorption.

He lived in temple corridors, underground cellars, and later in sacred places like:

  • Gurumurtam Temple

  • Virupaksha Cave

  • Skandashram

During this time, he was so immersed in the Self that he was unaware of the body. Devotees had to care for him, ensuring he was fed and protected.

Over time, seekers began to gather around him. Despite his silence, they experienced:

  • A deep inner peace

  • A quieting of thoughts

  • A sense of being drawn inward

Even when he began speaking later in life, his teaching remained simple and direct. He did not encourage complex rituals or philosophies. Instead, he guided seekers back to their own inner awareness.

What made his presence unique was this:

👉 He did not teach from knowledge — he taught from Being

His compassion was universal. Whether a learned scholar, a simple villager, or even animals — all were received with the same silent grace.

Many devotees felt that simply sitting in his presence was enough to experience transformation.

The Path of Self-Enquiry

At the heart of Ramana Maharshi’s teaching lies the direct path of Self-Enquiry (Atma Vichara).

Rather than focusing on external practices, he pointed seekers inward with a single, powerful question:

👉 “Who am I?”

This is not a mental exercise or intellectual analysis. It is a deep inward turning of attention.

How the Practice Works

  • When a thought arises, ask: To whom has this thought come?

  • The answer will be: To me

  • Then ask: Who am I?

By repeatedly tracing the “I” back to its source, the mind gradually becomes still.

What Happens Over Time

  • Thoughts lose their power

  • The ego begins to dissolve

  • A deep inner silence emerges

  • The true Self shines naturally

Ramana emphasized that:

  • The Self is always present

  • Realization is not something new to be gained

  • It is simply the removal of ignorance

This path is considered one of the most direct and powerful spiritual methods, because it goes straight to the root of the mind — the sense of “I”.
